reading and Writing is the key to understanding your identity: A synthesis of why I Write and My Name
Hello Readers ! today we will be synthesizing "My Name" by Sandra Cisneros and "Why I Write" by Joan Didion. the texts we talk about in previous posts.
"My Name" and "Why I Write" are both very personal texts focused around the writer learning more about themselves. So when asking yourself who the audience for these texts are I think it's anyone trying to learn more about themselves. Because both these texts open up the reader to asking questions like " What does my name mean?" or "why do I write?" If I had to categorize the audience to a specific age bracket I would say young people around there teenage years or there early twenties when there trying to understand what they want in life and who they are. I think this is also the purpose of these texts because again its helping the reader learn more about themselves. its interesting how both these passages guide readers to ask these question because in both of these passages they never flat out ask a question instead having the reader read like a writer. Making the reader focus on the techniques the author uses as well as the message their trying to get across.
What i find really interesting though is how different these texts are. When focusing on the differences that these text have we see that "My Name" Focuses much more on culture, family , and the feeling of being trapped. While "why I write" really focuses on finding yourself when your already free. We see this with Esperanza (the main character) in "My Name" explain her situation and the conflict she has with her name. While in "Why I Write" the speaker tells there personally experience and how they helped them become a better writer. We also see that "My Name" is much more emotional than " Why I Write". Making the reader feel what Esperanza has and is going through. "Why I Write" instead feels in a way empowering while the speaker talks about impowering themselves.
Interesting enough when looking at both of these text it teaches me that i can learn a lot about who I am through what I read and write. I've seen this in both the texts we've talked about today with both of them helping me question who I am. With each of these texts doing that in different ways. My name being very emotional pushes me to focus on the past. While "Why I write" makes me think about the future. Each make me reflect on what I've done and will do in my life. Helping me slowly understand who I am as a whole. In other words after reading these two texts I can see myself in a clearer lens because of these two passages. Helping me and readers like me reflect and think about who they are and will be.
Thank you so much for reading this week, See you next time!
